OUR STORY/

HOW WE MET

In a charming stroke of destiny, two kids who shared their formative years in Jersey City remained just out of reach until one fateful night. Returning home from medical school and between semesters, Paul reunited with friends under the vibrant glow of Manhattan. Amidst the rhythm and the joy of mutual company, Cacie's alluring presence caught Paul's eye. With courage and undeniable intrigue, he introduced himself. Though Paul soon returned to his studies, their connection lingered, nurtured by the digital whispers of distant friendship, patiently awaiting the moment their paths would entwine once more.

OUR FIRST DATE

Fate brought Cacie and Paul together again at a downtown Jersey City event years later. Their quick chat immediately captivated Paul, who, short on time and a bit nervous, enlisted a friend's help to get Cacie's number. That evening, a text ignited a series of calls, culminating in their first date just days later. They met for Shake Shack in the Financial District, following Paul's review class in Midtown.

THE ENGAGEMENT

In 2023, amidst the whirlwind of wedding preparations for friends tying the knot in Bali, Paul spotted the perfect opportunity: to turn their trip into something even more unforgettable — a proposal in paradise. He secretly hired a photographer and chose the iconic Tegallalang Rice Terraces as the setting. But rather than risk losing the real engagement ring to a jungle cliff or hidden crevice, he wisely brought a stand-in from Amazon — just in case.

The plan was set. The timing was right. But Bali had other ideas.

What began as a dream vacation quickly took a detour when Paul was hit hard by a stomach bug in Seminyak. For two full days, paradise became a blur of cold sweats and recovery naps. Yet as soon as he began to feel human again, Paul rallied, ready to embrace the second half of their journey in Ubud — and the moment he’d been meticulously planning.

But the universe wasn’t quite finished testing them.

Just as they arrived at their luxurious jungle villa, winding through the lush landscape in a golf cart, Cacie suddenly doubled over with a sharp, searing pain in her abdomen. Paul called out to the driver to stop. As he reached for her bag, he saw it — a large wasp clinging to the handle. Cacie had been stung.

They raced back to the villa lobby, but help was limited — just a basic rinse and little else. With the nearest hospital over an hour away, they leaned on their medical backgrounds, watching for any dangerous signs. Cacie, in obvious pain, insisted she’d tough it out. That night, Paul sat by her side, sleepless and anxious, googling everything he could about wasp behavior in Bali and silently questioning whether he should call off the entire plan.

But the next morning, Cacie woke with a quiet determination — sore but stable. She had no idea what the day would hold. Believing it was just another scenic stop, she got dressed and joined Paul as their "tour guide" — the undercover photographer — picked them up at dawn.

They arrived at the Tegallalang Rice Terraces before the crowds. The early light spilled through the treetops, casting golden rays over the emerald-green fields. It was quiet, peaceful — the kind of stillness you only get once in a lifetime.

As they walked to a central overlook, the "guide" offered to snap a photo with their phone. One shot. Then, casually, he asked for a second — this time requesting their "most romantic pose."

That was the cue.

As the photographer lowered the phone and raised a professional camera, Paul turned to Cacie, heart racing, and dropped to one knee — then, thanks to nerves, somehow ended up on both. Words caught in his throat, but Cacie’s tears said it all before he could even finish his sentence.

A week filled with chaos, setbacks, and stings had led to this perfect moment.

“Will you marry me?”
Through tears and laughter, Cacie replied,
“Yes!”
